Pilobolus has enjoyed an exciting week, both at home and abroad. A few highlights:

SHADOWLAND has been selected to receive Mexico’s 2011 Lunas del Auditorio award in the category of modern dance. Since 2002, the Lunas del Auditorio Awards have been presented by Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional to acknowledge the best live performances that took place in Mexico during a given year. The Lunas del Auditorio Awards are recognized as the most important acknowledgement in Mexico’s entertainment industry. Felicidades, Shadowland!

THE PILOBOLUS SEVEN, beginning their third week of a five-week tour, had the pleasure of opening White Bird Dance’s 14th season in Portland, OR and making friends with Barney, the white bird of White Bird. To learn more about Barney and White Bird Dance, go here: http://www.whitebird.org/.

In connection with White Bird’s educational outreach program, members of P7 also had the opportunity to share Pilobolus’ creative process and weight sharing techniques with a group of twenty students from Heritage High School, also located in Portland, whose dance program director called it a “once in a lifetime opportunity”. The participants were challenged to move in true Pilobolean form, pushing a few outside the boundaries of their comfort zones—and inspiring some sharp insights about the craft. “Don’t just dance! Read! Think! Leap! Run!” writes Ashley Schwellenbach of The New Times San Luis Obispo in a preview of P7′s show in SLO on October 30 that includes an expert gloss on Pilobolus culture, creative philosophy, and community. About our performers, artistic director Robby Barnett is quoted as saying,

What we are interested in is athletes fundamentally. They need to be able to run and jump. We’re interested in what they read and how they express themselves. We’re interested in people who want to join a community. It’s not quite joining a cult, but it does require a certain commitment to collective action.” Continue reading this great piece here.
