Having completed our project with OK Go and Trish Sie, we are starting a new collaboration with Takuya Muramatsu of Dairakudakan, one of Japan’s leading butoh companies. Takuya Muramatsu is a principal dancer and choreographer with Dairakudakan since 1994, and head of the Dairakudakan school. The new work, commissioned by the American Dance Festival as part of its 78th Anniversary Season, will premiere at ADF in North Carolina on June 30, 2011, with additional performances on July 1-2.
Established in 1972, Dairakukan fosters a Butoh style called “Tempu-Tenshiki,” which literally means “Being born into this world is a great talent itself.” Born at the same time in history, halfway around the world, Pilobolus concurs and is thrilled by this opportunity to combine its creative energies with those of Takuya Muramatsu.
“Pilobolus is so unique and the dancers are so skilled,” says Takuya. ”They make the impossible look possible. I am interested in making the possible look impossible.” It is a constant search for beauty in, as Takuya puts it, the “complexity of simple things.”
Tickets to the premiere on June 30th go on sale on the ADF website May 9th. To see the NYC premiere of this work, visit the Joyce’s website – tickets are already available. Mark your calendars!
