The Company:

Founded in 1971, Pilobolus has built an international following on its commitment to the human body as the ultimate medium of expression and the collective mind as its ultimate architect. Based in Washington Depot, Connecticut, in recent years Pilobolus has expanded from avant grade dance troupe into an entertainment company involved in the creation and distribution of dance, live performances, advertising, publishing, film, and music videos (Pilobolus was nominated for a 2012 Grammy® Award with the band OK Go for their work on the video, “All Is Not Lost”) throughout the world, without ever losing sight of their core mission: to make art that builds community.

The Opportunity:

Pilobolus Dance Theatre is seeking an intelligent, energetic, polished, good-humored and experienced individual to assist its executive director. The assistant role is critical to the smooth functioning of the organization and an incredible opportunity to participate in the day-to-day operations of each branch of the company, from the vantage point of the people responsible for making it go. This position is a 24/7 combination of personal assistant, manager, driver, gatekeeper and air traffic controller. The environment is creative and exciting, but incredibly fast-paced, and the ED relies heavily on his assistant for seamless coverage and support. The ideal candidate is someone who knows how to be ten steps ahead of the ED without being told how to get there. Bonus points for well-timed comic relief or a coffee break.

Candidate will be required to manage both professional and personal matters. The position entails administrative duties, including but not limited to, managing the ED’s calendar/schedule, creating and helping to move forward daily “To Do” lists, setting up conference calls, appointments and meetings, coordinating travel and accommodations, building expense reports, and updating and managing all contacts. You may also be called upon to keep minutes of meetings, process these quickly and circulate coherent summaries of the most salient points and actionable items. You must be highly organized, articulate and detail-oriented. Impeccable communication skills, both oral and written, are essential.

Additionally, you should expect that you will be occasionally required to commute with the ED to Pilobolus’s artistic home base in Washington, CT, as well as accompany him to points farther afield as needed, and may be asked to assist in the driving, so you must posses a valid driver’s license and feel comfortable behind the wheel.

Candidate should have at least two years prior experience as an administrative/personal/executive assistant and must be proficient in MS Word and Excel; familiarity with Google docs is a plus.

Position available immediately. Applications will be accepted until May 14, 2012. Submit your resume and cover letter to jobsearch@pilobolus.org. Please include in your cover letter a one-paragraph self-summary. Full-time; New York City-based; salary competitive with small non-profits and with an excellent benefits package.

Pilobolus held auditions last week. About four hundred dancers. Four positions. Four long days between New York City and our home base in Connecticut. And Wall Street Journal Arts and Entertainment reporter Pia Catton was along for the ride. She shares some frank observations about the process from behind the scenes in her story, “When They Say Jump…,” available here and here.

A sincere thank you to all who came out!
